AI adoption is moving faster than governance in many organizations. Teams test tools, managers request outputs, and new workflows emerge before policy, ownership, or review models are in place. This is not a technical issue alone. It is a management issue.
For Indian organizations, the challenge is not simply to copy a global governance model. It is to build one that is practical in local operating conditions while still credible to clients, boards, partners, and regulators.
Governance must begin with use-case clarity
Organizations often speak about AI in broad terms, but governance becomes usable only when use cases are classified clearly. Not every use case carries the same risk. Clear governance requires explicit answers:
- Who approves the use case?
- Who validates the output risk?
- Who monitors ongoing use?
- Who decides when additional controls are required?
Without these answers, AI usage can spread faster than institutional control.
Policy must be readable by operators
Many organizations begin with policy drafting, but the draft fails because it is too abstract, too legalistic, or too technical for everyday use. A usable AI governance policy should connect directly to operating questions:
- Which tools are permitted?
- Which data should not be entered?
- Which use cases require higher review?
- When should human sign-off be mandatory?
If the policy cannot guide behavior, it cannot govern it.
Procurement and governance are linked
AI governance is not only about internal use. It also affects vendor evaluation, contract scrutiny, security expectations, and ongoing oversight. Procurement teams, compliance teams, technology functions, and business owners should not be working from separate assumptions.
This matters especially when organizations adopt third-party AI products under commercial pressure. The faster the purchase, the more important the governance questions become.
Indian organizations need proportionate models
Governance does not have to be heavy to be serious. Smaller institutions and MSMEs may not need complex committees or extensive control layers. They do, however, need proportionate clarity on acceptable use, ownership, review, and data handling.
That proportionality is important. A good model is one that the organization can actually operate.
